Part 2

Next, go into your retouch tool, go to Darken RGB and use the above settings. Draw in the middle part the strands of hair like the picture to the right. Leave room between each dark line. Make sure the lines flow the way you want the hair to flow.
Don't worry about being too precise. Hair is rarely precise. You should have something like above when you are finished. Now to add some highlights.

Next, still in retouch, go to Lighten RGB and use the above settings. Draw between the dark lines you've just finished. You may want to make more than one pass with the retouch tool to get the lightness you want. I usually move it up and back again.
Your hair should now look something like this. It looks fine, but needs more depth.

Back to the Darken RGB, with the above new settings. Now go around the outside of the hair, along the part and around the face. Darken along the arms too. Darken a bit more around the neck. You can make more than one pass if it isn't as dark as you like, but don't make it too black.
You can see how it has more dimension now. Now it needs some real highlights.

Go to Lighten RGB and use the above settings. Now highlight where the hair would get more light. Along the top of the head and the sides of the head where the hair might flow out. Like in the pic to the right.
Again, you will have to use more than one pass to get the look you want. Play with it. You should have something like the above now. You could leave it this way, it looks nice. But I want more definition in the strands.

Back to Darken RGB at the above settings. Now go back over your orginal dark lines. This will separate them from where they were highlights. You'll make a couple of passes. Don't let the lines get too black.
You should have something like above now. Now we need to define the highlights more.
Last time to the Lighten RGB at the above settings. Repeat what you did with the darken last time. Go over your original light lines. Again, several passes to get them as light as you want. Try not to go too much over the dark lines already there.
Your hair should look similar to the above, now. Done with shading and nearly done with the hair.
Hair is rarely neat, so I add a new raster layer and I draw, with the lighter shade of hair, some lines for fly away hair. I try to follow the natural flow of the hair. I often make them and erase them several times until I am happy.
Clean up the flyaway strands so they are only one pixel wide.

And you are finished. Add accesories and whatever else you need to finish your doll.
This is the hair we are making. Base is from Enchanted.
You may print out this tutorial for your own personal use. You may not take any part of this tut and post it on your site or anywhere. You may not take any part of the doll involved in the tutorial.
This tut is for Paint Shop Pro 7 and assumes you have a working knowledge of the program.
